The Famous Jagannath temple in Puri
The Jagannath Temple is one of the important Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an avatar of Sri Krishna. There are many Jagannath temples in different states of India but one of the temple among them is the most famous temple across the world. That is, the Jagannath temple located in Puri, in the state of Odisha on the eastern coast of India.
The temple was built in the 12th century CE, by Anantavarman Chodaganga who was the king of the Ganga dynasty. In this temple sanctum Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and elder brother Balabhadra deities are being worshipped. The deities are carved from sacred neem logs which are known as daru. They are seated on the Ratna Simhassana that is Bejeweled Pedestal.
The temple is built in the style of Kalinga architecture. It looks impressive and magnificent with an amazing structure. The elevation of the temple is 65m. there are many mandapas inside the temple complex. They are built for religious event purpose where people gather and worship god by performing different rituals. Among all mandapas the Mukti mandapa is the most prominent mandapa.
In Puri Jagannath temple 148 festivals are celebrated every year. These festival include 12 yatras, 28 upayatras and 108 ritualistic festivals. Among them the Ratha Yatra festival of Jagannath is celebrated in the month of Asadha which comes in between the month of june-july. It is the most famous festival. Preparations for the Ratha Yatra festival will start early from the auspicious day of the Akshay Tritiya. The construction of the new chariots will be done prior the festival every year.
A huge crowd will gather at the place and celebrate the festival. Large number of people from different states and countries come to Puri during Rath yatra.
