Savitri was a famous Indian film actress who acted in many movies. She acted mainly in Telugu and Tamil movies she also worked in other languages like Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam movies. Savitri acted in more than 250 movies and was known as the female superstar of the south Indian film industry. She was one of the highest paid Indian actress during 1950’s. She was referred as Mahanati in Telugu and Nadigaiyar Thilagam in Tamil.
Savitri personal life
Savitri was born on 6 December 1935 in Chirravuru, Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. Her father was Nissankara Guruvaiya and her mother was Nissankara Subhadramma. Guruvaiya died when Savitri was six months old. After her father’s death her mother took Savitri and her sister to her aunt’s house. Savitri’s uncle Kommareddy Venkataramaiah Chowdary enrolled her in dance classes at her early age. After becoming an actress she married Rama Swamy Ganesan also known as Gemini Ganesan in the year 1952. He was the popular Tamil Hero. They both had one daughter and one son. Daughter named Vijaya Chamundi and son named Satish. She died on 26th December 1981 at the age of 46 after being in coma for 19 months.
Savitri Film Career
She participated in many dramas in her village and was also rewarded with a garland by the famous Hindi actor Prithvi Raj Kapoor. She was appreciated by people for her eye expressions. Later Savitri tried for chances in movies and after some defeats she became an Heroine. In the beginning of her career she played a small role as a dancer in the movie “Patala Bhairavi”. Later she got an Heroine chance in “Pelli chesi choodu movie”. She gave an extraordinary performance as Shashirekha in the mythological movie “Mayabazar” in 1957. She acted with famous heros of south India like NTR, ANR, M.G.R, Shivaji Ganesan, her husband Gemini Ganesan etc.
