S.V. Ranga Rao- “Viswa Nata Chakravarthi”

S.V. Ranga Rao was the popular Indian actor who mainly appeared in Telugu and Tamil movies.

S.V. Ranga Rao personal life

He was born on 3 July in the year 1918 in a village named Dowlaiswaram located near Rajamundry in East Godavari District. His full name is Samarla Venkata Ranga Rao. His father name is Gotteswara Rao and mother name is Lakshmi Narasayamma. S.V. Ranga Rao’s father was an excise inspector at Nuzvidu town in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.

SVR completed his schooling at an Hindu college in Madras presidency. When he was young, at an age of 12 years he was intrested in stage acting. He moved into acting profession after the completion of his bachelor’s degree in sciences.

In the year 1947 on 27 December he married Leelavathi. She was the daughter of Badeti Venkata Ramaiah and Koteswaramma. Ranga Roa and Leelavathi have three children- two daughters (Prameela Roa and Vijaya Roa) and one son (Samarla Koteshwar Roa).
SVR died on 18th July in 1974 in Madras due to cardiac arrest.

S.V. Ranga Rao Film career

Ranga Rao was invited by the director B.V. Ramanandam (SVR’s relative) to act in his film, Varoodhini. He was invited to play the lead role. Roa immediately left his job and joined the acting profession. Later he got opportunity to act in many movies and he became a popular actor. He was given the antagonist lead role first by vijaya pictures.

He acted in different types of movies like social, biographical and mythological. Rao is well known for his mythological character as “Ghatotkacha” in the famous movie “Maya Bazaar”.

S.V. Ranga Rao is titled as “Viswa Nata Chakravarthi”, “Nata Sarvabhouma”, Nata Simha”, “Nata Shekar”. In his overall film career Roa won a number of awards.

  • Rao was honoured best Actor Award at the Third Afro-Asian Film Festival which was held in Jakarta in 1963 for his role Keechaka in Nartanasala.
  • He received Filmfare special south award for Naanum oru penn (1963)
  • He recieved Nandhi award for best actor in Bandhavyalu (1968).
  • The movies Bandhavyalu (1968) and Chandragrahanam (1967) directed by him won the Nandhi award for best feature film.
  • He won the Rastrapati award for his best acting in movies- Annai (1962), Sarada (1962), Naanum Orupen (1963), Karpagam (1963) and Nartanasala (1963).
