Birla Mandir is one of the famous Hindu temple located near Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad, Telangana. This temple is constructed on a hillock of 280 feet height, this hill is known as Naubath Pahad. It is built over an area of 13 acres of land. The construction of the temple was started in 1966 and it took ten years of span to complete the building. After the completion of the temple in 1976, the opening was done by Swami Ranganathananda of Ramakrishna Mission.
Not only the Birla Mandir of Hyderabad, there are several temples all of which are known as Birla Mandir are situated across India. These all temples are constructed by Birla Foundation.
Birla Mandir Architecture
The temple is built in the combination of Dravidian, Rajasthani and Urkala style of architectures. It was constructed with 2000 tons of pure white marble imported from Rajasthan.
The entrance shrine also known as Rajagopuram is built in the South Indian style of architecture and the main shrine which is called as the Jagadananda Vimanam is built in the Oriyan style of architecture. The temple also has finely carved marble sculptures depicting the great epics from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
The lord Venkateshwara swamy idol made up of granite is housed inside the main sanctorum (garbha gudi). The 11 feet swamy idol rests inside the sanctorum with a carved lotus shrine forming an umbrella on the top. At the temple premises there is a tall brass flagstaff of height 42 feet.
The Birla Mandir looks awesome with bright illumination in the evening time.
No traditional bell is seen inside the temple because Swami Ranganathananda wished that the temple should be suitable for meditation.
Inside the Temple
As the consorts of Lord Venkateshwara, Padmavati and Andal idols are also housed in separate shrines inside the temple.
The temple also has separate shrines for different Deva and Devi deities including Hanuman, Shiva, Shakti, Ganesh, Brahma, Saraswati and Lakshmi. Birla temples are open to all, as noted by Mahatma Gandhi and other Hindu leaders. It is also the best tourist place in Hyderabad.
